Tech Director - Energy Sector, Australia
Thoughtworks is looking for a Tech Director to lead our Energy Sector initiatives in Australia. This senior leadership role combines strategic market engagement, technical excellence, and innovation to position Thoughtworks as a key technology partner in the energy industry.
You will play a pivotal role in defining and executing the technology strategy for the vertical, collaborating closely with the Industry Market Leader and Regional CTO to enhance our brand, expand our portfolio, and drive revenue growth. This role requires deep technical expertise, industry-specific knowledge, and the ability to build strong external partnerships while fostering a culture of technical excellence within Thoughtworks.
A core expectation of this role is to work directly with energy clients in an advisory and strategic capacity, ensuring the successful delivery of projects that drive meaningful business outcomes. You will engage with senior executives, and technology leaders to help shape their digital and technology roadmaps, leveraging Thoughtworks’ expertise to solve complex challenges in the energy sector.
The role has a strong external focus, including market sensing, thought leadership, and ecosystem engagement. Internally, you will develop technical talent, drive innovation, and ensure alignment between technology and business strategy. Regular travel across the region is required
Job responsibilities
- Collaborate with regional CTO, global peers and service line leaders to ensure a cohesive, market-aligned approach.
- Oversee technical delivery, ensuring high-quality solutions that meet client expectations and deliver measurable business value.
- Build and manage a forward-looking technology portfolio, incorporating emerging trends that create value in the energy sector.
- Serve as a trusted technology advisor to senior executives, board members, and investors, providing strategic insights on complex technology challenges; Working directly with energy clients to define, refine, and execute technology strategies that align with their business objectives.
- Lead billable consulting engagements, shaping client technology strategies and ensuring successful project delivery.
- Represent Thoughtworks as a thought leader by speaking at industry conferences, publishing articles, and participating in industry forums.
- Establish and nurture strategic partnerships within the energy ecosystem, including technology vendors, regulators, and industry bodies.
- Champion technical excellence and innovation, ensuring our teams remain at the forefront of technology in the energy sector.
- Drive the development of key tech leaders, fostering a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing technical communityใ
- Conduct industry research and analysis, ensuring Thoughtworks remains relevant and competitive in the energy market; Aligning technical strategy with business objectives, collaborating across regional teams and executives to drive impact.
Job qualifications
Technical Skills
- Proven experience as a Tech Director, CTO, or senior technology leader in a consulting organization or large-scale enterprise.
- Deep understanding of cutting-edge technologies, software development methodologies, and cloud-based solutions.
- Experience in developing and executing technology roadmaps aligned with business goals.
- Strong track record in leading major digital transformation initiatives and driving complex technology change.
- Broad knowledge of software engineering, including programming languages, frameworks, and architectural patterns.

- Proven ability to navigate complex, fast-changing environments, balancing technical innovation with business priorities.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging at the executive and board levels.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.

- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under uncertainty.
- Deep understanding of industry trends, regulatory landscapes, and emerging technologies in the energy sector.
- Proven experience in external engagement, including speaking at events, contributing to thought leadership, and fostering ecosystem partnerships.
Ability to represent Thoughtworks externally, maintaining open and engaged relationships with clients, vendors, investors, and partners.
