Thoughtworks has been partnering with multiple youth activist organizations and environmental advocacy groups to launch Earth Day Live, a 3-day livestream event to combat the climate crisis. From April 22-24, millions of virtual attendees will come together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and call on world leaders for a safe, sustainable future while also raising money to support COVID-19 relief efforts.
At Thoughtworks, we strive to recognize our position of privilege, be open to new ideas, and leverage our skills and knowledge to build a more equitable future. We take a systems change approach to creating sustainable and far-reaching solutions by opting to support communities through partnership and solidarity, rather than charity. From building Rapid FTR (a tracing mechanism that connects vulnerable children to their families during emergencies), to raising awareness of discriminatory AI, Thoughtworkers have applied their skills and knowledge in forward-thinking ways to improve the lives of those who have historically been underprivileged or discriminated against.
Guiding Thoughtworks North America’s Cleantech and Sustainability efforts are Natalie Hollier, Product Principal, and Dan Lewis-Toakley, Consultant Developer. Thoughtworks’ community of technologists has been contributing to the open source Earth Day Live website and a customizable website banner widget to raise awareness for the event. Many climate and environmental organizations such as the US Youth Climate Strike Coalition and Stop the Money Pipeline Coalition have been leading, planning, and advocating for the upcoming event, with Thoughtworkers providing technical knowledge and support.
The isolation that can accompany social distancing or quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic can be incredibly mentally and emotionally taxing. The opportunity to come together virtually to combat climate change—something that touches us all regardless of geography—can provide a glimmer of hope and a feeling of unity. We have yet to see the full effects of how COVID-19 has impacted climate, but through early, unified action, it’s possible to make positive, long-term changes that allow our planet to flourish.
