For the last four years, the Thoughtworks Agile Analytics group has been redefining the role of a data scientist and bringing new capabilities to the tech sector. Earlier this week Thoughtworks' Lead Data Scientist, David Johnston came to visit the Big Apple to give a talk on Big Data and the work we do at Thoughtworks, the field of data science in general; where it came from and where it may be heading.
David's talk explored these areas in-depth and touched on many of the projects Thoughtworks has done. Highlights of the evening included why Thoughtworks, as a consultancy, has the ability to employ our Data Analytics team on ambitious software projects, but also smaller analytics-only projects. David also dialed-in on how we are bringing new capabilities to data science including mathematical and statistical modeling, machine learning and data analysis experience.
David's presentation ended with an inspirational anecdote about "bold ideas being the best ideas" along with a slide picturing Adam Sandler's debut album, 'They're All Gonna Laugh at You', a book giveaway and a scientific "thumbs up : thumbs down" audience poll on the evening.
