Tools such as Pallet offer a compelling approach to environment creation and management through declarative provisioning. Usually, this is accomplished by declaring your environment topology - a number of instances, OS, network configuration and applications - using a DSL, and then creating the entire environment automatically via a commandline tool. This approach differs in the decoupling of instance creation and application provision, and in the addition of the ability to declare dependencies between domain-specific application-level services over multiple boxes.
